FOCUS and WebFOCUS Training Experts

Back in the late 1970’s and 1980’s when the mainstay programming languages on mainframe operating systems were COBOL, FORTRAN, PL/1, and RPG, Information Builders' FOCUS was the elixir for rapid generation of programs for retrieving and managing data. As a fourth generation language, FOCUS provided the capability for analysts, programmers, and savvy business professionals to leverage their industry-specific skills and create tailored applications for analyzing data and reporting information. In the late 1980’s and 1990’s, FOCUS evolved into a cross platform development platform: IBM mainfame, client-server, and PC. It’s featureset and superb functionality,   continue to make it a valuable component in forward moving information technology departments.   And now with mainframe web connectivity and web server portals, WebFOCUS is being used to retrofit legacy FOCUS applications and create new web enabled applications. With more than a quarter century's experience in information technology (it was known as data processing when we started), SYS-ED has the prerequisite skillset and knowledge transfer know how to provide invaluable insights and superior WebFOCUS training courses and WebFOCUS training programs. What this means is that we can teach and explain the nuances, interpret Information Builder guidelines, and much to IBI’s chagrin, answer questions and provide guidelines for how to make FOCUS and WebFOCUS work efficiently with IBM system software (VSAM, IMS, and DB2) in a variety of enterprise configurations.

Performance Objectives

SYS-ED  FOCUS and WebFOCUS courses and training programs teach:

  • Enterprise reporting for the rapid creation and deployment of formatted reports from data in real time.
  • Querying that provides business professionals with the capability to generate both ad hoc queries and perform OLAP analysis.
  • Tools for data visualization and mapping.
  • Delivery capabilities for scheduling, distributing, and archiving information.
  • Data management strategies for utilizing the WebFOCUS feature set for accessing, storing, managing, and delivering data.

Our FOCUS and WebFOCUS courses include up-to-date information which reflect a consultant’s hard earned swagger and the tough questions that our client’s ask (which we encourage!) after a course is over. As an independent training company, we can provide unbiased expert information on FOCUS and WebFOCUS in different operating systems and hybrid configurations. And given the reality of today’s multiple operating systems environments - z/OS, MS Windows, and UNIX only training which addresses the detailed minutiae and idiosyncrasies of each configuration will be truly effective.

Courses can be taken as a part of an integrated program or on a la carte basis. Tailored course offerings are conducted on-site at client locations.

There are new web server and web enabling technologies which in many cases will require integration with the existing mainframe systems and enterprise databases.

SYS-ED trained a significant number of first generation mainframe DP personnel in the 1980’s. And look forward to the opportunity and challenge of training their successors in the 21st century. Albeit, with a more comprehensive set of delivery options for conducting the training and a hybrid mix and match set of software choices.

FOCUS and WebFOCUS Courses by SYS-ED

Hands-on Training
SYS-ED's FOCUS and WebFOCUS courses are tough, but they're worth it. Our challenging "hands-on" training draws upon our extensive library of case studies and sample programs to explain, demonstrate, and implement real-world applications. This will provide the foundation and experience to design, develop, and update legacy FOCUS applications and develop next generation WebFOCUS applications.

Courseware
SYS-ED courseware and training aids have been designed to compliment the class lecture and provide a framework for coding and debugging FOCUS and WebFOCUS programs. They also serve as a reference source after a course is over.

Teaching is Our Business
Most computer training companies are divisions of large software companies or consulting companies. Not SYS-ED. Our only goal is to provide top-quality computer training for highly motivated business and information technology professionals - no more and no less. Because we're independent, we're free to concentrate on teaching--and we do it very well.

Our Teachers Know How to Teach
SYS-ED instructors combine teaching skills with broad practical experience as consultants. And they know how to teach. We teach not only "how to", but "why", building a solid foundation in fundamentals and insights into advanced materials. After a course, they are available to answer questions.

Enrollment - SYS-ED Courses are NOT for Everyone
No one is allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED mainframe course, without a consultation with our Director of Education. We review the operational objectives and project specifications for the organization evaluating whether to send its employee for the training. The employee is only allowed to register if they have the appropriate background corresponding to the correct learning path.

Focus and WebFocus Training at Your Office
SYS-ED FOCUS and WebFOCUS courses are conducted in conjunction with training partners in North America and Europe. If you prefer, we'll arrange tailored FOCUS and WebFOCUS training on-site at your organization’s facilities inclusive of mobile computer classroom set-up. On-site SAS courses can include the identical workshops, case studies, and hands-on approach as the FOCUS and WebFOCUS training we offer in New York city.

For additional information including outlines, availability of private courses, references, and course customization, contact David Shapiro at our New York office at 212-564-9147, 48, 49.
